Another classic dish that is perfect to using our Mediterranean spice mix. The combination of the béchamel mixed with EK’s version of the meat sauce, is addictive and tastes even better the next day!

Preheat 180c
Increase 220c

Ingredients

– 1 kg mince (beef, pork, lamb or plant based alternative)

– 1 500g pkt Misko Macaroni No 2 Greek Pasta (Bucatini or Rigatoni can be used)

– 3 cloves garlic finely diced

– 2 red onions diced

– 180g feta cheese

– 2-4 tbs. Evrope’s Kitchen Mediterranean spice mix

– 2 bay leaves

– 1L Tomato passata

– 2-4 tbs Extra Virgin Olive oil

– Salt and pepper to taste

– Optional: A pinch of cinnamon or 1 cinnamon stick

Béchamel sauce

– 1 Litre of milk

– 125g butter

– 120g plain flour

– 2 egg yolks

– ¼ tsp nutmeg

– Salt to taste.

Meat sauce

  1. Heat pan to medium high with olive oil and add diced onion, cook until translucent.
  2. Add garlic and sauté until fragrant and add mince.
  3. Break up mince and cook until it starts to brown. Once browned add Evropes Kitchen Mediterranean spice mix, cinnamon, salt, pepper and mix
  4. Add tomatoes and once it begins to boil add bay leaves and place heat on a low simmer. Cook for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  5. Set aside until assembly.

Béchamel

  1. Use pan to melt butter on low-medium heat
  2. Once melted add flour into the pan and whisk continuously for 1-2 minutes until combined and looks like a paste.
  3. Add cold or warm milk slowly a little at a time and continue whisking-This helps it from going lumpy
  4. Once it becomes a thick cream like consistency, Add salt, pepper and grated nutmeg
  5. Take off the heat and add eggs. Whisk vigorously until egg has mixed in.

Pasta

  1. Cook the pasta at least 1-2 minutes less than the packet instructions as they will continue to cook in the oven
  2. Drain the pasta and add to a 20x30cm roasting pan
  3. Crumble the feta cheese and mix into the pasta (reserve 2 tbs feta)
  4. Add the meat sauce on top of the pasta and crumble remaining feta.
  5. Pour the béchamel sauce on top and smooth it out.
  6. Cook in oven for 180c for 45 minutes until a light golden brown.
  7. Allow to cool 20-30 minutes before serving.
  8. Serve with a side salad.
